The statewide organization represents California ophthalmologists and their patients. CAEPS’ activities include public education about important eye health care concerns, legislative advocacy, interaction with third-party payers about reimbursement and coverage issues, and continuing medical education for ophthalmologists and their staff.

“The California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons is truly the most important frontline organization that advocates for the profession of ophthalmology and our patients,” Mannis said. “The presidency of the organization allows me to engage physicians throughout the state in the important work of the organization.”

CAEPS also closely follows bills moving through the California Legislature of interest to the field of ophthalmology and medicine in general.

“As the academic medical institution located in the state capital, UC Davis has always been a strong participant in the representation of the profession at the state legislature. We hope to continue that role in the coming year,” Mannis said.

Mannis plans to focus on strengthening the organization through increased membership and involvement, particularly among academic colleagues. “I am hoping to engage a broad base of ophthalmologists, some of whom feel ‘cocooned’ by their type of employments or are simply fully occupied by the day-to-day activities of providing quality care to their patients,” Mannis said.

Mannis specializes in all forms of corneal transplantation and ocular surface surgery. He

He is also the director of the Eye Center at UC Davis Health, which combines the very highest quality vision health care services with leading-edge ophthalmic science. A new facility, the Ernest E. Tschannen Eye Institute, is scheduled to open in 2022.
