Shatz delivers presidential address at WTA meeting
David Shatz recently delivered the presidential address — "A Speck of Sand" — at the 50th Annual Meeting of the Western Trauma Association (WTA) in Sun Valley, Idaho. The event was the last in his year-long tenure as president of the organization.
In his talk, Shatz emphasized the honor involved in being one of many who together are moving the field of trauma surgery forward and making significant differences in the lives of patients.
Shatz is one of three UC Davis Health surgeons who have served as WTA president. Christine Cocanour served in 2015 and and G. Jerry Jurkovich served in 1997. Jurkovich's presidential address inspired an ongoing lectureship titled "Paint the Ceiling" that focuses on the human side of medicine. It is believed to be the first time that three physicians from one organization have led the WTA.
In addition to being a UC Davis trauma surgeon, Shatz is a leader in the region's disaster response efforts, having worked and taught within the federal serarch and rescue system. His clinical and research experience focuses on the body's immunologic response to trauma.
The Western Trauma Association improves trauma care through research, education, sharing clinical experiences and the professional development of all specialists involved in trauma care. For information, visit westerntrauma.org/
