Since fifth grade, my son Julian has been obsessed with playing basketball. And by high school, he’d gotten really good – serving as team captain and being voted co-MVP of the freshman team. So when he came home from a practice limping after a teammate stepped on his foot, he insisted on icing and playing in a weekend tournament. Two plays into the first game, another player stepped on his already injured foot and Julian fell to the ground.
The following Monday, I was able to get a same day appointment with his pediatrician, Dr. Martins, at the Davis Primary Care Clinic. At the appointment, she ran an exam and immediately sent Julian for an X-ray to determine what was causing the pain. While a fracture wasn’t detected, she emphasized that continuing to play with that kind of pain could lead to more serious injury. I was so impressed with how she talked to him and made him understand how important it was to take a couple weeks off to properly heal. She explained how he would prolong his career and prevent further damage and a potentially longer break, by taking an immediate time out.
And it worked! He took her counsel seriously, let his body heal and was back on the hardwood helping his team win tournaments by mid-summer.
