National Cancer Survivors Day celebration set for June 2

UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center to celebrate with therapy dogs, gifts, workshops, refreshments and more

(SACRAMENTO)

Cancer patients and survivors, as well as their friends and family, are invited to join UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center to celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day. This is the 20th year the cancer center’s Supportive Oncology and Survivorship program has organized the event to honor everyone impacted by cancer.

While the official National Cancer Survivors Day is June 4 this year, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center will celebrate Friday June 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There will be ice cream and other refreshments for cancer survivors, caregivers and staff along with cancer support information tables and a photo booth.

It all takes place at the cancer center at 2279 45th Street, Sacramento. In the outdoor courtyard, you can pet cancer center therapy dogs and visit the “Hope Wall” where you can post the things in life worth celebrating as well as the hopes you have in your life. There will also be arts and crafts for kids of all ages.

The nonprofit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation held its first event in 1988. The annual event is a “celebration of life,” where survivors gather with cancer center doctors, nurses and other staff as well as friends and family to show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be full and fun.

Angela Usher, manager of the supportive oncology team, said that whether you are newly diagnosed, in treatment, recovery or in remission, you are a cancer survivor and this celebration is about you.
