Clinical/Research Interests

Conduct psychological and child welfare evaluations, including: parent-child relationship assessments, differential diagnosis, treatment/reunification planning, and juvenile/adult recidivism risk assessment. Within the CAARE Center’s American Psychological Association accredited internship program, Dr. Carmichael provides training in conducting child welfare and psychological evaluations, as well as conducting Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), individual, and conjoint therapy. Provides expert witness testimony and consultation to social service and forensic programs throughout Northern California regarding child sexual abuse disclosure, emergent mental health concerns, treatment needs, and adoption/placement planning. Supervise trainees and staff who are conducting child welfare and psychological evaluations. Provide consultation to agencies throughout Northern California regarding emergent mental health concerns, treatment needs, and adoption/placement planning. Lead training for multidisciplinary agencies regarding the provision of evaluation and treatment services, with an emphasis on evaluating children and families with a history of maltreatment. 

Research interests include: assessing the impact of violence and maltreatment on families, understanding the process of child sexual abuse disclosure, conducting quality child welfare evaluation services, providing evidence based practices for maltreated children, and decreasing placement disruption for children in foster care.
