Most children are helped and comforted if a parent or relative can stay at the bedside. If your child is in the general pediatric unit, you are welcome to visit anytime, around the clock. We permit one parent to sleep overnight in a sleep chair beside each child's hospital bed. A bathroom and shower are available down the hall for your use.

Visitor information

Visiting hours for siblings, other family members and friends are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Since many patients are at risk for infection, however, we require young visitors to check in with a unit nurse before going into your child's room. Visiting children must be healthy — without fevers, coughs, colds, or other common childhood illnesses — and they must be free of exposure to chicken pox, measles or any other contagious diseases during the past month. All visiting children must be supervised by an adult at all times.

Family lodging and restaurant information

If you are from out of town, you may be eligible for low-cost lodging at Ronald McDonald House or Kiwanis Family House, located on the grounds of UC Davis Medical Center. For more information about this service, please call Pediatric Social Services at 916-734-2234. A list of local restaurants and motels is available from Clinical Social Services at 916-734-5597.

In the general pediatric unit, each patient's bed has a telephone. You may phone your child's room between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. by dialing 916-734-2011 and asking for "Davis Tower Seven." Then give the operator your child's room and bed number. To check on your child's condition, call the pediatric nurses' station at 916-703-3070 at any time of the day or night. Patient information is considered confidential, however, and will be given over the phone only to you, the parent. Please explain that restriction to other relatives and friends.
