Gina James became a perinatal sonographer and joined UC San Diego in 1992 as an ultrasound practitioner. She provided sonographic expertise in all fetal surgical cases, including twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, thoracoamniotic shunt placement, radiofrequency ablation and percutaneous umbilical blood sampling. She also performed complex ultrasounds on multiples, including triplets, quadruplets and sextuplets. Due to her advanced ultrasonographic skills, she became one of the first ultrasound practitioners within the UC system. James was recruited by UC Davis help launch the Fetal Surgery and Treatment Care Program and advance the team’s prenatal diagnosis capabilities.
