Tele-audiologyThe Tele-audiology program uses telemedicine to provide comprehensive audiology diagnostic evaluations to children in rural communities. With this program, we evaluate infants who do not pass their newborn hearing screening.

All infants receive a hearing screening shortly after birth. If a child does not pass the hearing test, their family is strongly encouraged to get a follow-up test within three months. Early intervention can dramatically impact language skills and academic achievement.

In Northern California, many families whose children fail the newborn hearing screening face significant barriers to accessing follow-up diagnostic evaluations, including a severe shortage of trained audiologists and geographic barriers. This program has had a positive impact on many children’s cognitive, speech and language development.
