Trauma and Emergency Care

New insights on abdominal trauma

UC Davis emergency medicine chair Nathan Kuppermann, in collaboration with emergency medicine professor James Holmes and colleagues, examined whether Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) can safely lead to a decrease in CT scans for kids with abdominal trauma. In a June 2017 issue of JAMA, they reported that in a randomized clinical study of 925 UC Davis pediatric trauma patients, there was no difference in important outcomes in children receiving FAST compared with standard trauma care. The authors suggested a large, multicenter follow-up clinical trial.
