Diana Farmer Featured in Comstock’s “Women in Leadership” Issue
Diana Farmer, chair of the Department of Surgery at UC Davis Health and a CHPR faculty member, is featured on the cover of this month’s Comstock’s magazine. Her inspiring story, as a medical innovator and pioneer—she was the world’s first female fetal surgeon—and head of a “team of more than 250 faculty, postdoctoral fellows, residents, students and other staff,” is featured in Comstock’s “annual salute to extraordinary women who are shaping our future.”
Dr. Farmer came to UC Davis Health from UCSF in 2011 and has been performing surgeries on fetuses and neonates, conducting research and clinical trials, and leading her large team of medical professionals by example ever since. She and colleague Aijun Wang are currently testing a novel stem cell therapy for repairing damaged neural tissues in babies with spina bifida…while those babies are still in their mothers’ wombs! Farmer received a $9M grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to fund this exciting work.
Dr. Farmer’s recognition as an extraordinary woman who is shaping the future is obviously well deserved.
