- Call for Proposals on COVID-19 Research -

Focus on Health Services and Outcomes

The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound and diverse impacts on patients, providers, and the healthcare system. Research to better understand these impacts and devise strategies to address them is critical.

The UC Davis Center for Healthcare Policy and Research (CHPR), the Center for Health and Technology (CHT), and the Behavioral Health Center of Excellence (BHCOE) announce a call for pilot projects to be conducted during 2020.

These awards are intended to support highly meritorious, rapid projects that will study the impacts of COVID-19 on health services, access, outcomes and costs. Pilots will enable UC Davis faculty to obtain preliminary data that enhance their ability to compete for extramural funding.

The pilots will:

  • Contribute new knowledge about the rapid changes to healthcare in response to the pandemic
  • Identify challenges and best practices
  • Develop pilot data to be used for extramural funding applications

Particular areas of interest include, but are not limited to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on:

  • Mental health
  • Substance Use Disorder treatment
  • Use of telehealth
  • Access to testing and care
  • Evaluations of prevention strategies
  • Patient-centered outcomes
  • Shared decision making
  • Clinical delivery strategies
  • Clinical decision rules

Funds will be available for up to $25,000 in total costs beginning May 15, 2020.

Proposals with budgets in the $15-20,000 range will be more favorably reviewed and allow funding for a greater number of investigators. Support may be provided for staff or trainee support, supplies, and other research-related expenses; funds may not be used for faculty salary support, to purchase equipment or for travel expenses. All proposals are required to include a plan describing how the proposed project will lead to a proposal for extramural funding. Proposals that include at least one trainee at the pre-doctoral or post-doctoral/clinical fellow level are preferred. The role of the trainee in the project must be clearly defined. An important criterion in the review of the applications is the use of CHPR and CHT resources as appropriate for the proposed project; applicants are encouraged to contact the Centers’ directors for assistance.

All proposals will be evaluated based on scientific merit and potential impact.

Application receipt deadline: May 1, 2020

Earliest funding start date: May 15, 2020

The goal of the current CHPR – CHT – BHCOE Call for Proposals is to enhance and augment research on COVID-19 impacts on health services, access, outcomes, and costs by providing support for the development of new teams and partnerships to generate pilot data for extramural applications to address the many facets of the evolving pandemic.
