Kurt Schaberg, an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, has been named one of the Top Six of the American Society for Clinical Pathology’s 40 under Forty honorees for 2021.

The program shines a spotlight on highly accomplished pathologists, pathologists in training and laboratory professionals under the age of 40 who have made significant contributions to the profession and stand out as the future of laboratory leadership.

Kurt Schaberg is an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Schaberg specializes in gastrointestinal surgical pathology and cytology. During the pandemic, one of his quarantine hobbies has been creating a pathology teaching website, Kurt’s Notes, which has gained an international following and has had over 29,000 individual users from over 147 countries. The website provides diagnostic reference guides for a range of conditions commonly encountered by anatomic pathologists.

“This is a wonderful recognition for Dr. Schaberg and the department,” said Lydia Pleotis Howell, professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and medical director of UC Davis Health’s clinical laboratories.

“Dr. Schaberg is a dedicated and creative teacher. His online Kurt’s Notes teaching site is very popular. During the pandemic, he also created an outstanding new online elective in gastrointestinal pathology that enhances our medical students’ learning experience. In addition, he is a great clinical teacher to our staff and students while doing his everyday patient-care work,” Howell said.

Schaberg joined the UC Davis faculty in 2019. He earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed his residency in anatomic pathology at Stanford University.

“It is a tremendous honor to be named one of the top ASCP 40 under Forty. I’m sincerely humbled by the recognition and also by the growing worldwide audience my teaching notes, Kurt’s Notes, has garnered,” Schaberg said.

Founded in 1922, ASCP is a medical professional society with more than 100,000 members. They include board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologists, pathology residents and fellows, laboratory professionals, and students.

The Top Six 40 Under Forty honorees were selected based on public voting and committee selection. They include two laboratory professionals, two pathologists and two pathologists in training. Each of the six will receive free registration to attend the ASCP 2021 Annual Meeting in Boston, a $1,000 stipend toward airfare and lodging and recognition at the Annual Meeting.

“This has been a year like no other. Yet our young professionals in pathology and laboratory medicine have risen to the challenges, time and time again,” said ASCP President Kimberly W. Sanford. “It gives me great pleasure to recognize six ASCP members who have gone above and beyond to improve healthcare delivery through innovation and creative endeavors for their institutions. I look forward to seeing their careers and leadership roles develop in the coming years. Through ASCP’s 40 Under Forty program, we have a wonderful opportunity to recognize outstanding individuals and to provide them the support they need to become our next generation of leaders.”
