Course description
The PICU Training Program is for nurses newer to the PICU environment including new graduate nurses to nurses with <3 years of experience or adult nurses who care for critically ill children in adult ICUs at UC Davis Medical Center. This class is part five of a five days series. You must register for each session individually if you want to attend subsequent sessions. This course provides participants with a review of in-depth pathophysiology, evidence-based care, and skills through simulation-based scenarios relating to caring for critically ill children. The content for day five includes: common diagnoses and surgeries in the pediatric population, neurological conditions and monitoring, trauma injuries in the pediatric population, and near drowning sequelae.
Prerequisites and preparation
UC Davis employees are required to complete the following Pediatric Learning Solutions modules which are available through UC Learning Center prior to attending class. Additionally, there are 4 recommended but not required modules listed. For planning purposes, please note the required modules will take approximately 4 hours to complete. CEUs will be awarded for these modules, separate from the class.

- Nursing Management of Chest Tubes
- Craniotomy
- Hydrocephalus
- Meningitis and Encephalitis
- Pediatric Orthopedic Trauma
Recommended:
- Intracranial Pressure Monitoring
- Pediatric Thoracic Trauma
- Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury
- Pediatric Abdominal Trauma
UC Davis employees must bring proof of completion of all 5 required eLearning modules to class. Participants may bring their CEU certificate, certificate of completion or their UC Learning Center training transcript as proof. Community registrants are not required to complete the PLS modules.
C.E. contact hours
Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider number CEP 26, for 6.67 contact hours.
Attendees will not receive C.E. credit if they are more than 20 minutes late; no partial credit can be awarded.
