Course description

This Cardiovascular Access and Sheath Management is a self-directed e-learning module designed for UC Davis Health Nurses who are interested in the management of cardiovascular patients. This course is a pre-requisite to completing the Cardiovascular Access and Sheath Management Checklist.

This course will discuss the pre and post management of patients undergoing cardiovascular procedures. Topics include Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), Cardiac Catheterization, Electrophysiology (EP), and Structural Heart Disease patient management. The course material will also discuss complications post cardiovascular interventions, common skills and products utilized during patient management and inpatient charting. This course will incorporate case studies to assist in learning.

Upon completion of e-learning module, learners will be able to:

  • Describe 3 risk factors for heart disease.
  • Identify ACS spectrum, recognize signs and symptoms of ACS diagnosis and identify goals of ACS treatment.
  • Identify cardiovascular patient management including pre procedure considerations, post procedure process, and EPIC documentation.
  • Describe the proper line management for sheaths, how to obtain blood specimens, the process for Atrial and Venous (AV) sheath and Transradial (TR) Band removal, including use of products utilized.
  • Identify 3 complications of interventional cardiac catheterization patients and treatments for those complications.
  • Identify the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure, 3 complications of TAVR and the post recovery process.
  • Define structural heart disease, indications for Mitraclip and Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) and identify nursing considerations post procedure.

C.E. contact hours

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider number CEP 26, for 5.33 contact hours.

To earn 5.33 contact hours, learners must complete the following:

  1. Review the online module and its learning activities.  Sound must be enabled for the duration of the educational activity.  This activity will take approx. 5.5 hours.
  2. Complete the post course quiz on the e-learning module with at least 80% accuracy.
  3. Complete the online evaluation.
