This one-year program is designed develop knowledge and skills that will better prepare family physicians for careers in academic and community teaching settings.  Fellows participate in structured faculty development curriculum, clinical care, educational activities and scholarly work. Leadership development is a core aspect of the program.    Fellows have both a fellowship advisor and faculty mentor. 


Fellows choose to participate in at least one the following:

  • UC Davis Health System’s Early Career Leadership Program http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/facultydev/early-career-leadership.html.  This highly interactive curriculum is designed to engage participants learning core competencies necessary for effective career development and professional advancement. The ECLP concretely examines what is required both professionally and personally to advance in academic medicine. 
  • Northern California Faculty Development Fellowship. 
    Participants in the UC Davis Faculty Development Fellowship may choose to participate in the part-time Faculty Development Fellowship hosted by UCSF. This program involves monthly meetings with other family physicians from the area and focuses on developing knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to become an effective and successful faculty member. 
  • Elective opportunities.  There are many resources available to fellows who desire to further their knowledge and skills in an area of interest. Examples include: health policy and advocacy, medical student teaching, obstetrics, hospital-based medicine, and procedural skills.


We will be open to applications for 2018-2019 in the Fall of 2018. 

Program participants must be graduates of an ACGME accredited Family Medicine residency program and board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Family Medicine. Applicants must also be eligible for licensing by the California Medical Board.

The fellow participates in the care of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. 


  • Attending for Family Medicine Wards service (4 weeks)
  • Obstetrics Call (30 units)

Outpatient:  (96 Half-Day Clinics with any combination of the following)

  • continuity clinic
  • resident precepting in the Family Medicine Clinic
  • medical student teaching
  • urgent care clinic


The fellow participates in teaching and administrative activities that comprise core aspects of academic and teaching faculty careers. 


  • supervision and education of residents during clinic, on wards service, and during obstetrics call
  • facilitation of medical student small groups
  • presentation of didactic lectures and workshops
  • participation in UC Davis Network of Family Medicine Residencies Annual Spring Conference


  • Residency Education Committee
  • Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Committee
  • Clinical Competency Committee


Fellows are involved with ongoing clinical and educational projects through the department. We encourage fellows to submit their work to the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Annual Spring Conference and other conferences as appropriate.

Compensation for the fellowship is based on House Staff PGY 4 and benefits offered by the UC Davis Health System.
