12-year-old Folsom resident Jackson Manning had what appeared to be stomach flu symptoms last February and then things took a turn for the worse. His parents awoke one morning to find him completely unresponsive and turning blue.

Jackson was rushed to UC Davis Children’s Hospital, where he was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. Due to complications caused by his diabetes, he had a collapsed lung and severe pneumonia. For 39 days, he remained in the hospital. He required a ventilator and had to relearn how to walk and to talk again.

“He’s my hero for pushing through like he did,” said Mike Manning, Jackson’s dad.

After months of physical therapy, doctor’s appointments and much perseverance, Jackson has now returned to playing competitive sports, including basketball.

Last Saturday – on the anniversary of the date that Jackson Manning was admitted to UC Davis Children’s Hospital – Jackson and his family made new memories and some new friends from UC Davis Men’s Basketball.

Thanks to a sponsorship with UC Davis Children’s Hospital and UC Davis Athletics, Jackson was named UC Davis Men’s Basketball honorary team captain at the game. He also was invited to do his first broadcast with KSAC 105.5 at the game, fulfilling his dream of becoming a sports commentator.

“Today was amazing. I got to meet all the players. The game was phenomenal. It was probably the most exciting game of the season and I was there with courtside seats!” said Jackson.

He was also invited to a team practice, where he helped draw up plays, play a game of knockout with players and received a UC Davis basketball jersey with his favorite number 11 embossed on the back.

“This was such an awesome experience for Jackson,” said Tricia Manning, Jackson’s mother. “We can't thank [UC Davis] enough for creating such amazing new memories for Jackson on the one-year anniversary of his hospitalization. He hasn't stopped smiling!”
