“Dr. Sugawara has served UC Davis for over four decades,” said UC Davis Children’s Hospital pediatrician-in-chief, Satyan Lakshminrusimha. “He is a role model for all faculty and residents.”

Sugawara was presented with the award at the recent pediatric resident and fellow graduation, where he received a standing ovation from students and peers.

“I have had the privilege of precepting pediatric residents with Dr. Sugawara during Thursday afternoon continuity clinics since I arrived at UC Davis more than 15 years ago,” said Su-Ting Li, UC Davis residency program director. “He has been a wonderful teacher and we have all benefited from his vast experience.”

In addition to his clinical work, Sugawara generously donated money for a Michael M. Sugawara, MD, fund for pediatric education, established in 1997. The interest accrued from the fund helped build the Sugawara Library and Lounge, as well as education and wellness programs for residents. These include annual resident retreats, lunch at block didactic conferences, an annual Sugawara award and various wellness activities.
