Annual Robert E. Stowell Endowed Lectureship scheduled for September 8

Women’s health will be the focus of the annual Robert E. Stowell Endowed Lectureship hosted by the UC Davis Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

“Ovarian Cancers: Where do they come from, why does it matter, and what are we doing about it?will be presented by Kathleen R. Cho, M.D., Peter A. Ward Professor of Pathology and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs with the University of Michigan Medical School.  Dr. Cho’s lecture will be a live/virtual hybrid presentation held 5:00-6:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2021 in the Medical Education Building Second Floor Auditorium, Suite #2222.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks are required.  Registration for the event is now open.

For those who wish to attend virtually, connection details are below:

Dr. Cho was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2016.  She is an accomplished physician-scientist with two decades of funding from the National Cancer Institute, the Ovarian Cancer Research Program of the Department of Defense, and several private foundations to investigate the molecular mechanisms of gynecological cancers. Her team has developed unique mouse models for ovarian and fallopian tube carcinomas.

Her lecture is designed to help physicians recognize how routine histopathological observations can be paradigm-shifting and practice-changing.  She hopes to show how animal model systems can serve as platforms with which to test novel strategies for cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

“We are truly privileged to learn from Dr. Cho, who is a role model for cancer investigators and women researchers in particular,” Dr. Howell said.  “We hope members of the UCDH community will join us and be enlightened by her experiences.”

During her visit to UC Davis, Dr. Cho also will participate in a Women in Medicine and Health Sciences discussion, “Navigating a Career in Academic Medicine,” at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2021.  Melissa Bauman, MD, Neurology Professor and WIMHS Director, will be joining her for the live/virtual hybrid event.  RSVP here for the WIMHS discussion.

Dr. Cho is the recipient of numerous awards, including being named among the 2017-2018 Castle Connolly Exceptional Women in Medicine. She previously served as Secretary of the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists and as a Councilor of the American Society for Investigative Pathology and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP). Additionally, she is an Associate Editor of Laboratory Investigation and the International Journal of Gynecological Pathology, and she is a member of the Applied Immunohistochemistry and Molecular Morphology editorial board.

Dr. Cho is a graduate of Yale University, and earned her medical degree from Vanderbilt University.  She completed her residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where she also completed a Gynecological Pathology Fellowship and a Research Fellowship in Cancer Genetics. After joining the faculty of Johns Hopkins, she continued her career at the University of Michigan Medical School as a professor of Pathology and Molecular Medicine and Genetics.

The annual Stowell Lectureship is funded through a generous gift by the founding chair of the UC Davis Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Robert E. Stowell, M.D., Ph.D., whose distinguished career as a physician and scientist included service as the director of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, and as chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of Kansas. Stowell, who died in 2011, was the recipient of the nation’s highest award in pathology, the American Association of Pathologists Gold-headed Cane.
