Medication for addiction treatment: New Continuing Medical Education training

Recent statistics show that opioid overdose deaths have been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Biden administration recently announced it would loosen regulations on prescribing buprenorphine, which has been shown to prevent deaths from opioid overdose.

The UC Davis Health Office of Continuing Medical Education is pleased to offer medication for addiction treatment (MAT) training. Four courses were developed in joint partnership with UC Davis Health Department of Emergency Medicine’s James Chenoweth, M.D., M.A.S. and California Bridge, a program of the Public Health Institute

Medication for addiction treatment is an effective tool to treat patients with opioid addiction. MAT combines medication, such as buprenorphine, with counseling and has proven to be a helpful strategy when caring for patients. The complimentary, online modules are to educate health providers on the identification, treatment, and follow-up needs for patients with opioid use disorder for improved outcomes.

The MAT training is available on-demand through CME California and is certified for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM.  The four courses include:

  1. Buprenorphine in the Hospital: How Do We Do It?
  2. CA Bridge Model: Treatment, Culture and Connection
  3. Substance Use Navigators
  4. Nurses Drive Care for Opioid Use Disorder
