Our new guiding principles: Delivering ‘tomorrow’s health care today’

(SACRAMENTO)

After months of conducting surveys, townhalls, research, collaboration and dialogue with UC Davis Health staff, leadership has unveiled the system’s new mission, vision, values and patient promise. These new guiding principles will serve as a compass for the Clinical Strategic Plans in our clinical, educational and research areas and provide a fundamental base for the standard of care across the UC Davis Health system.

New guiding principles for UC Davis Health:

Mission: Grounded in equity, we provide unparalleled care across California, transforming lives and communities. Our teams research and develop trailblazing therapies and technologies, educate and prepare a future-ready workforce, and drive excellence into all we do.

Vision: Tomorrow’s Health Care Today.

Values: Trust, Kindness and Inclusion.

Patient Promise: Patients are at the center of everything we do.

At a Clinical Strategic Plan retreat in mid-June, David Lubarsky, CEO of UC Davis Health and Vice Chancellor for Human Health Sciences, spoke to leadership and work group members who had participated in the development of the new strategies and initiatives. The goal is to move the health system into the future, improve the patient care team experience, and streamline workflows. In his remarks, Dr. Lubarsky described the benefits of innovating in the changing health care field, while noting that UC Davis Health’s guiding principles will focus on the steps necessary to offer transformative patient care.

“Our new mission, vision, values and patient promise are reinvigorating us to push harder, dig deeper and move faster into the future, so that we can provide groundbreaking therapies to our patients, while working to combat the very real health disparities that exist in our own community,” Lubarsky said. “There is no higher purpose for us than to offer patient-centered care that seeks to heal the whole person. I believe these new guiding principles convey that.”

Jennifer Baron, the chief experience officer who was instrumental in building out the new values of UC Davis Health, said, “Our new values are reflective of the voices of employees across the UC Davis Health system who developed them. Living our values of ‘Kindness, Inclusion, and Trust’ ultimately support us in taking care of each other and our patients. They remind us how to show up every day for each other as we work together to ensure those who have entrusted us with their care are truly at the center of everything we do.”

Ron Amodeo, chief strategy officer who is spearheading the Clinical Strategic Plan for the organization, said, “Our new vision, mission, values and patient promise truly speak to who we are becoming as an institution. They reflect our roots and our aspirations. They highlight our commitment to equity and inclusion. These guiding principles will show our patients that we are up to the challenge of being the premier academic health system in Northern California. While it will take time, and change is always hard, we are investing in ourselves like never before. And these guiding principles will be our North Star.”

To achieve its mission, vision and values, UC Davis health has aligned strategies and priorities with the new guiding principles developed through its ongoing Clinical Strategic Planning work. The goal is to create an integrated academic health system over the next five years.

These changes will strengthen UC Davis Health’s ability to deliver quality health care to patients, enhance the workplace for employees, and improve learning and training environments for students, residents and fellows. The new direction supports and embraces diversity, equity and inclusion efforts as well. Finally, UC Davis Health will be in a better position to partner with its surrounding communities to uplift the lives of the most vulnerable, while expanding its regional system of care to greater numbers of patients throughout Northern California.
