Pulmonary Rehabilitation Wellness Day promotes PR treatment for COPD, other chronic respiratory diseases

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Here in the U.S., more than 16 million people have COPD, and many experience disabling symptoms and suffer a marked decline in quality of life.

However, pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a proven treatment for COPD and other chronic respiratory diseases, benefiting individuals with improved physical function, symptoms, and mood.

And not only does PR help those with COPD feel better and live more independently, it has the potential to help them live longer as well. A recent study found that, in persons hospitalized due to acute exacerbation of COPD, PR within 3 months of discharge vs. later or no PR, was associated with a highly significant lower risk of mortality at one year.

Despite these benefits, only 3–4% of Medicare beneficiaries in the U.S. with COPD receive pulmonary rehabilitation. Pulmonary Rehabilitation Wellness Day (April 7) promotes the full utilization of PR as an effective treatment that significantly improves the quality of life for patients.
