Shaikh leads American Academy of Pediatrics’ quality improvement council

Ulfat Shaikh, medical director of health care quality and professor of pediatrics at UC Davis Health, has been elected chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (COQIPS).

Shaikh starts as COQIPS chairperson-elect this month. On July 1, 2022, she will begin a two-year term as chairperson and will be eligible to serve a second two-year term.

In this role, Shaikh supports the mission and vision of the council by ensuring that current priorities are moving forward, representing COQIPS in leadership meetings, guiding the development of new activities, supporting the work of the council’s five subcommittees and collaborating with AAP staff on the overall operations of the council.

“Through this role, I look forward to supporting the AAP’s more than 67,000 pediatrician members in ensuring that the children and families we serve receive high-quality, safe, equitable and family-centered health care,” Shaikh said. 

Shaikh’s expertise is in measuring performance in health care and supporting clinicians in designing, implementing and evaluating quality improvement initiatives. She has led training and coaching programs in health care quality improvement methods for public, private and academic organizations.

The mission of COQIPS is to support the AAP in obtaining optimal health for all children. To accomplish its mission, COQIPS defines, promotes, improves, measures, educates, and advocates for quality improvement and patient safety. The council is led by 11 elected leaders and is home to over 700 members with expertise in quality improvement and patient safety.
