UC Davis Health develops The CARE Project

The CARE Project at UC Davis Health provides direct patient-care interdisciplinary services through recreation and creative arts therapy programs. It enhances the healthcare environment and aids in the healing and recovery for patients at UC Davis Medical Center through the following:

  • C – Compassion, Companionship, and Creativity
  • A – Amenities and Art
  • R – Recreation and Relaxation
  • E – Education and Exploration

Kathleen (Katie) Lorain has recently transitioned from the position of Pediatric Art Therapist at UC Davis Children’s Hospital into a new role of Creative Arts and Recreation Therapy Manager where she will train and supervise new employees, recruit and manage volunteers, and provide Art Therapy and Reiki to adult patients.

“We aim to support patients, their families, and caregivers on their journey to healing and wellness,” Katie shared. “The CARE Project provides our patients with the opportunity for self-expression, relaxation, and recreation. It promotes independence and improves quality of life through evidenced-based, clinical interventions and therapeutic activities, which also bring a little bit of ‘home’ to our patients.”

There are many opportunities for UC Davis Health employees and the community to support The CARE Project.

Art Therapy Internship and Practicum

The Art Therapy Internship and Practicum is open to students who are actively attending an approved or accredited Art Therapy Master’s program by the American Art Therapy Association.

 Volunteer with The CARE Project

The CARE Project is interested in hosting virtual events, such as art instruction, culturally inclusive support groups, guided yoga, meditation, and more for patients and their families.  The CARE Project is also developing a staff-led Reiki program, where Reiki Level II staff members can volunteer their time and provide Reiki to adult patients.

In-person Volunteer Placements

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the In-person Volunteer Services program remains suspended until further notice. When the COVID-19 visitor restrictions have been lifted, The CARE Project looks forward to offering in-person volunteer opportunities such as 1:1 patient visits at the bedside, pet therapy through the PHUR Program, music performances, and more.
