UC Davis Health has been recognized as a four-star hospital in the 2021 Quality and Accountability Ranking by Vizient Inc. The company is a national leader in health care performance improvement and measures overall safety and quality in patient care.

Out of 101 members in the Comprehensive Academic Medical Centers group, UC Davis Health ranked 29th nationally for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality care.

“As a world-class hospital and research institution, UC Davis Health is committed to providing our patients with the safest environment and highest quality of care,” said J. Douglas Kirk, chief medical officer. “The annual Vizient Quality and Accountability Scorecard is the gold standard academic medical centers use to measure their progress toward this goal. This achievement is a tribute to our staff and faculty, who have prioritized our commitment to continuously improving patient care.”

This year, 565 participating hospitals were segmented into four cohorts for the Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking. The ranking measured performance on the quality of patient care in five domains: mortality, safety, effectiveness, efficiency, and patient centeredness. The ranking factors in measures from the Vizient Clinical Database and includes performance in core measures data, the HCAHPS survey that analyzes aspects of the hospital experience and the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network.

UC Davis Health scored extremely high in the most important and highest weighted measure – mortality, ranking ninth nationally. The medical center ranked No. 1 in equity, leading the nation in that domain.

“UC Davis plays a unique and critical role in Sacramento,” said Kirk. “As the area’s only academic health system, we are meeting patients where they are, and providing them with unparalleled care.”

The Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking helps participating hospitals and health systems understand their performance against their peers. It also identifies structures and processes associated with high performance in quality and safety across a broad spectrum of patient care activity. The recognition period is for work spanning July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021.
