Michael Condrin named COO of UC Davis Health Outpatient Care

After a comprehensive a national search, Michael Condrin has been appointed to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer, Ambulatory Care (COO-AC) for UC Davis Health. The position is responsible for all of UC Davis Health’s outpatient care, including the health system’s 70 clinics at 25 clinical care locations.

The position is a peer of the Chief Operating Officer of the UC Davis Medical Center, who is responsible for all of the health system’s inpatient care. Condrin has over 17 years of experience working for UC Davis Health, most recently serving as Executive Director of the outpatient clinics since 2019. Under Condrin’s leadership and working closely with the UC Davis Medical Group, UC Davis Health’s ranking in the Vizient Ambulatory Quality and Accountability survey has improved from 25th to 3rd nationally.

Previously Condrin directed the UC Davis Health Network of off-campus clinics, the Cancer Care Network, clinical affiliations at partner hospitals and the creation of a new Transitions of Care department. As Director of Clinical Operations from 2013 – 2018, he led a division of 1,750 staff and directed operations for 60 outpatient on-campus and off-campus clinics. Prior to this, Condrin held the positions of Assistant Dean of Administration for the UC Davis School of Medicine and Chief Administrative Officer in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery.

The role reports to David Lubarsky, Vice Chancellor, Human Health Sciences and Chief Executive Officer of UC Davis Health and is responsible for providing clinical leadership to a rapidly growing ambulatory clinical enterprise that is part of a progressive integrated health system. The COO-AC provides strategic leadership to ensure seamless, integrated care with the intent of executing the quadruple aim of high-quality care, high patient satisfaction, high caregiver morale, and low cost in ambulatory clinical operations of the physician group.

“Mike has been a tremendous leader for our clinic network, ensuring greater coordination between our inpatient and outpatient services,” said David Lubarsky, CEO of UC Davis Health. “This has been especially important over the last few months. As the interim leader for our outpatient care team, he quickly activated patient care teams, with a superb attention to detail, playing a key role in our ability to share our testing capabilities across UC Davis Health and in support of public health agencies around the region. This focus on quick response and flexibility will be even more important in the future, as more and more patient care moves into outpatient and virtual care settings.”

UC Davis Health has begun to implement changes to the overall organizational structure of clinical operations to improve patient access to care, to expand the number of patients seen, and to help patients be seen in the most appropriate and most convenient location for their care needs. These changes include separating inpatient and outpatient care so that each division is given equal attention, support, voice and leadership. The COO-AC oversees 70 ambulatory care clinics in 25 locations around Sacramento, with 1,000,000 physician visits annually. Having a separate division for outpatient care (apart from inpatient care) will provide a singular strategic focus for growth of ambulatory services and help UC Davis Health to achieve the lofty goals we have as an organization.

Condrin holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Davis, Graduate School of Management, a Master of Science, Physical Therapy from Boston University and a Bachelor of Science, Physiological Science from the University of California, Los Angeles.
