Francisco Ramirez, simulation specialist at the UC Davis Health Center for Simulation and Education Enhancement, was selected this week to serve on the Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist Advisory Board with the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Founded in 2004, the organization promotes the art, science and practice of healthcare simulation through global and interprofessional engagement. Ramirez’s terms runs until May 2022.
In September 2020, Ramirez earned his Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist certification from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. This voluntary certification is the gold standard in simulation education and only about 420 people worldwide are certified.
As a member of the advisory board, he will be responsible for assuring the integrity of the society’s certification program.
“I am committed to diversity in education and creating an inclusive learning environment. As a bilingual person of color with a disability and being a late discovery adoptee, I feel I bring a sense of perspective to simulation that creates value for our students,” Ramirez said. “As part of the advisory board, I hope to incorporate and expand this perspective in testing and simulation in general.”
A 23-year employee of UC Davis Health, Ramirez has spent the past nine years in health care simulation. Previously, he worked as a senior trauma technician in the emergency department and has 21 years of critical care experience. In his spare time, he enjoys making wine and is completing an internship at the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Service.
Ian Julie, associate professor of emergency medicine and medical director for the simulation center, said Ramirez is an innovator who has created multiple medial training devices for the center.
“We’re so glad Francisco is part of our team. That he took the initiative to not only obtain specialty simulation certification but also throw his hat in the ring for consideration as an advisory board member is commendable,” Julie said. “They made a great choice in selecting him and his participation allows UC Davis Health to have a larger impact in an organization that serves thousands of members and hundreds of centers.”
The UC Davis Center for Simulation and Education Enhancement is a state-of-the-art health care simulation center focused on interprofessional medical education and research activities. Since its humble beginnings on the first floor of the UC Davis Medical Center, the simulation Center has grown to include more than 10,000 square feet of dedicated simulation space on the third floor of the UC Davis Center for Health and Technology. In addition to patient simulators with advanced lifelike physiology, the Center features a trauma bay, operating room, inpatient unit, six-bay patient ward area, task training room, technology enhanced classrooms and standardized patient exam rooms. It’s accredited as a Comprehensive Education Institute by the American College of Surgeons. For more information, visit health.ucdavis.edu/simulation.
