The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis is one of 12 nursing schools in the country recognized as Nursing Diversity Champions by Minority Nurse, a nursing magazine produced by Springer Publishing.

According to Minority Nurse, the Nursing Diversity Champions award recognizes “a select group of colleges, universities and health care institutions across the nation that committed to recruit and retain diverse students, faculty and clinicians.”

“We are honored with this recognition. This is work that takes time and our commitment is ongoing,” said Dean Stephen Cavanagh. “Embracing the diversity of our voices, identities and experiences is a top priority if we are going to achieve our mission to transform health care through health education and research.”

According to Piri Ackerman-Barger, associate dean for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for the School of Nursing, the recognition underscores the school’s commitment to advance health and improve care for everyone.

“We have a clear mission and vision for diversity and inclusion at our school and we strive to live up to that,” Ackerman-Barger said. “This is a collective process and something that involves all members of the school.”

Ackerman-Barger was appointed to lead the school’s diversity efforts in June. The position was created as part of the school’s ongoing commitment to create a diverse and welcoming setting to learn, work and collaborate.

To help promote diversity among students, faculty and staff, the School of Nursing launched a webpage in 2019 detailing the team’s beliefs and commitment to ensuring all members feel included, valued and respected. The school’s diversity statement affirms current beliefs and future aspirations within the school community.
