Pediatric Heart Center nurse practitioners raise funds for Make-a-Wish kids

(SACRAMENTO)

The UC Davis Pediatric Heart Center nurse practitioners are hiking to make wishes come true for children diagnosed with critical illnesses, including congenital heart disease.

Barb Goebel, Mary Zanobini and Callie Brecek are fundraising for the Make-a-Wish Northeastern and Central California and Northern Nevada chapter. They’re participating in the Trailblaze Challenge, a 23.2-mile hike along the Tahoe Rim Trail. The team will hike May 20-22.

“A wish creates an opportunity for hope and the ability to experience life beyond illness,” said Goebel, who has witnessed firsthand the power of wishes that have been granted for UC Davis pediatric heart patients.

The team hopes to raise $17,500. They are currently already halfway to their goal. Anyone can make a donation to their team online.

Funds raised will be used to fund wishes for UC Davis pediatric patients. Some examples of wishes granted:

  • A custom backyard skateboard park
  • A custom chicken coop, with chickens
  • A trip to Aulani, a Disney Hawaii Resort
  • A trip to Green Bay to meet the Packers and watch them play
