Medical Student Elective Courses
HON 462 - CONSULT CLERKSHIP / AMBULATORY CLERKSHIP (maximum 2 students per session - 2 or 4 week rotation)
Prerequisite: Fourth year medical student in good standing. The student will work in close contact with the Hematology and Oncology Fellow(s) and the Hematology and Oncology Attending physician to provide inpatient consultation to patients with cancer and blood disorders on surgical and medical services. Students will have significant primary responsibility for the initial evaluation of these patients and will have extensive one-on-one experience with the Hematology and Oncology physician. Students will participate in Division Teaching Conferences and have the opportunity to present and discuss cases at the hospital-wide tumor boards. Reading assignments will be based on relevant cases. The student will work with outpatients in the Cancer Center specialty clinics. Students may have opportunities to read bone marrows and assist in the prescription and administration of chemotherapy.
HON 493 -Taking a Transdisciplinary, Interprofessional Approach to Reducing Cancer Health Disparities (maximum 15 students per session -- 4 weeks) Offered Winter Quarter
Prerequisite: Fourth year medical student in good standing. The four-week Special Study Module covers cancer health disparities, transdisciplinary action and community-based participatory research and health literacy from an interprofessional perspective. Viewing cancer as a process, beginning with risks and prevention (including an overview of disparities in screening rates), provides a model for better understanding chronic diseases and new approaches to improve health care including an understanding of the social, cultural, environmental, political and behavioral determinants of disease and resulting disparities. The goal of the course is to develop new models to improve health and reduce cancer & health disparities by creating an educational opportunity for 4th year medical students, graduate-level nursing students and MPH students to learn from each other’s disciplines.
