Internal Medicine Residency Program
Welcome to UC Davis Internal Medicine!
Thank you for your interest in UC Davis. I hope this website gives you a sense of what makes our residents - and our program - so special. To tell you more about who we are, I want to share our Mission Statement and our Program Aims. If this resonates with you, then please consider us, as we strive to achieve this every day.
Our Mission
The mission of the UC Davis Internal Medicine Residency Program is to train outstanding internists who will improve the health of patients and communities, including the underserved.
Our Core Values
Academic Excellence.
Our residents take pride in treating patients with complex medical conditions, and engage in a variety of research and quality improvement projects in healthcare with the support of outstanding faculty who cultivate academic excellence.
Community.
Our welcoming residents, staff, and faculty create an atmosphere that promotes wellness for our healthcare providers and our patients.
Diversity & Inclusion.
Our outstanding students, residents, and faculty integrate their diverse backgrounds and life experiences to meet the needs of our patients and colleagues.
Humility.
Our internal medicine teams care for one of the most diverse patient populations in the nation, serving each patient and community with humility.
Leadership.
Our internal medicine teams lead with service in mind, always accountable to others, and highly respectful of their teammates, patients, and community.
Our Program Aims
Our internal medicine teams care for one of the most diverse patient populations in the nation, serving each patient and community with humility.
Of course, the ultimate goal is to train outstanding internists and to help each resident achieve his or her ultimate career goal after residency. I liken our program to a community of pluripotent stem cells – one in which each stem cell (or resident) can differentiate into a wide array of mature cell types (internists). Our diverse training milieu allows residents to become a rural primary care physician, clinician-scientist, hospitalist, academic or community subspecialist, or clinician-educator. We have an established track record of highly successful graduates engaged in a variety of different career paths.
There are many excellent internal medicine training programs that boast dedicated faculty, smart residents, and advanced clinical care systems. UC Davis is one of those programs. Here are features that set us apart from other programs (click on each bullet for more details).
- A collegial, positive learning environment with a commitment to anti-racism
- Specialized tracks to meet each resident’s educational needs and goals
- Incredible diversity of patients and care settings including public, VA, and managed care (Kaiser Permanente)
- A balanced schedule – 4+1+1 in internship and 4+4 in upper levels
- A great place to live – Sacramento
While I am proud of our program’s unique accomplishments, the number one reason to come here is the people. We have a wonderful group of residents, an incredible cadre of distinguished faculty, and supportive, friendly staff who all strive to make your residency training outstanding and fun.
We follow the University of California guidance for all residencies to do only virtual interviewing and also to not allow structured, in-person second look visits. This is because we believe this is the best way to be equitable in our recruitment process for all applicants. But many applicants during these pandemic years have come to Sacramento on their own to check out our medical campus and the Sacramento area. We urge you to do so if you are considering our program!
Please call the Internal Medicine Residency Office at 916-734-7080 or e-mail imres@ucdavis.edu if you have any questions about our program or application process.
