Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Director, Practice Management Board
David H. Wisner, M.D., Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Director of the Practice Management Board, is responsible for designing the structure, rules, responsibilities, funding needs and physician medical practice goals for UC Davis Health.
A member of the UC Davis faculty since 1987, Wisner is recognized as a skilled leader and an experienced and dedicated clinician. In his long and varied career, he has served as chief of the Division of Trauma and Emergency Surgery at UC Davis; trauma medical director at Mercy San Juan hospital, where he developed a Level II trauma center from the ground up; vice chair and interim chair of the Department of Surgery at UC Davis; chief medical officer of Surgical Affiliates Medical Group, a surgical hospitalist company; and chief medical officer at Rideout Memorial Hospital. Prior to his current position, Wisner served as associate director of the Practice Management Board.
A nationally recognized trauma and emergency surgeon, Wisner helped to create at UC Davis one of the nation’s largest trauma and emergency surgery services. He is an active clinician with broad experience in dealing with surgical emergencies, and is a national leader in developing the specialty of acute-care surgery. He has served in leadership positions on the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Executive Committee and in the American College of Surgeons, including membership on the Board of Governors, the Committee on Trauma, and the Verification Review Committee.
Wisner has been a funded researcher in a variety of areas relating to surgery and medical ethics and has an extensive list of peer-reviewed publications. He has received a number of teaching awards at UC Davis, including the Outstanding Resident Teaching Award; multiple Outstanding Surgical Faculty Teacher awards; the Excellence in Teaching Award; the C. John Tupper Prize for Excellence in Teaching; and a Dean’s Award for Teamwork. Wisner also has been honored as a UC Davis School of Medicine Outstanding Alumnus.
In 2011, Wisner was inducted into the Gold Humanism Society. He has been selected multiple times for inclusion in Best Doctors in America. He has a broad understanding of the clinical, research, and teaching missions of UC Davis Health, which he applies in his daily work to further the efforts of UC Davis faculty.
