Surveying patients about their experience within the UC Davis Medical Center is a vital element in the commitment to discovering and sharing knowledge to advance health.

Consumer Choice Award

Consumer Choice logoUC Davis Medical Center was again selected as a Consumer Choice Award winner by National Research Corporation (NRC) in 2016-17, the 17th time UC Davis has earned the recognition. Out of 17 hospitals in the Sacramento region, UC Davis Medical Center received the highest composite score in each of four areas: Best overall quality, best overall image and reputation, best doctors and best nurses.

The award is based on a survey of health care decision makers in households between October 2015 and September 2016, with respondents rating their local hospitals on multiple quality and image ratings.

Patient surveys

Inpatients

In surveys conducted by Press Ganey Associates, Inc. for fiscal year 2015 (July 2014 to June 2015), 95 percent of UC Davis Medical Center adult inpatients indicated they would definitely or probably recommend UC Davis to others. Ninety-two percent of inpatient pediatrics users surveyed indicated a "very good" or "good" chance of recommending the hospital.

Outpatients

In the same Press Ganey survey, 97 percent of UC Davis clinic outpatients indicated that they would recommend UC Davis Medical Center clinics to others.

Outpatient Surgery

Approximately 97 percent of patients asked to evaluate their outpatient surgery experience expressed a "very good" or "good" likelihood of recommending the service.

Emergency Department

Seventy-five percent of patients surveyed about their emergency room visit showed a "very good" or "good" chance of recommending the unit to others.

Home Health

Ninety-nine percent of home health users would definitely or probably recommend the service.

Consumer opinion study

In a survey of more than 300 area households conducted by MarketVision Research during the summer of 2015, UC Davis Medical Center was named the area’s leader in medical research and use of advanced technology.

In the same study, UC Davis Health System (now UC Davis Health) was rated as providing the region's best specialty care and making the most significant contribution to its community.

Higher-than-average patient recommendations

In a government-sponsored volunteer survey of patients at more than 3,700 U.S. hospitals, UC Davis matched or exceeded state averages in eight of 11 categories: whether nurses always communicated well, whether doctors always communicated well, whether staff always explained about medicines before administering, whether patients were given information about what to do during recovery at home, whether patients strongly agreed they understood their care when they left the hospital, whether patients gave their hospital a rating of 9 or 10 on a scale of 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest), and whether they would recommend the hospital to others.

The medical center met or exceeded state and federal averages in three of 11 categories: whether patients strongly agreed they understood their care when they left the hospital; whether patients gave their hospital a rating of 9 or 10 on a scale of 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest); and whether they would recommend the hospital to others. Seventy-seven percent of UC Davis patients said they would recommend the hospital.

The results, as they appeared on the federal Hospital Compare website as of January 2017, are from the Hospital Consumers Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Strong rating of care

UC Davis Medical Group's overall rating of care exceeded the state average in the 2014 Patient Assessment Survey, a survey of nearly 59,000 health-care consumers statewide about patient care received in 2013. The survey is conducted by the nonprofit California Cooperative Healthcare Reporting Initiative. UC Davis earned a score of four out of four in the individual category "coordinating patient care," and three out of four (four being highest) in the individual categories: communication with patients, helpful office staff,  timely care and service, and staying healthy.
