Media Statement

A member of our UC Davis Health community, on the Sacramento campus, has reported testing positive for the COVID-19 virus. While the source of the infection is unknown, we do know the employee was not involved in the care of a COVID-19 positive patient and therefore it is more likely the virus was contracted due to community spread. The employee has not been at work since Friday, March 13. The employee developed symptoms over the weekend, and we were notified by the employee about a positive test yesterday afternoon. However, as part of our stringent protocol, we are taking every precaution to continue to protect our UCDH employees and medical and nursing students, and we remain confident in our personal and patient protection standards.

Our Infection Prevention team is conducting an investigation in accordance with recommended best practices. Employees who worked with this person are being informed so they can monitor their symptoms or be tested if they have any symptoms.

While our UC Davis Health employees, faculty, trainees, and students work in clinical health care settings, they are also members of the community.  We have been advising our team members for several weeks that, with the increasing community spread of this coronavirus, it would only be a matter of time until a team member would contract an infection through their connections to the community.

We are continuing to take actions to protect both our employees and our patients:

  • UC Davis Health personnel with the ability to work from home have been doing so.
  • We have restricted visitors to continue to keep the virus out of our hospital.
  • We are advising our employees how to stay safe when they are not at work, and strongly encouraging them to follow public health directives to stay at home and away from others who are sick.

When our care providers are at work, we have strict infection prevention in place to protect both patients and providers.  The circumstances around COVID-19 change daily, and we want everyone to know we are taking all possible actions to ensure we keep our patients and providers safe, so we can continue to protect the health and well-being of the entire UC Davis Health community.
