Philosophy of Care

Rheumatologic diseases often affect multiple systems in the body, so a careful evaluation of the entire patient is needed to determine the correct diagnosis and the extent of involvement. This requires a careful history and review of systems, so time is taken to complete a thorough history and exam. Evaluation may also involve labs, imaging, and referrals to other medical specialists and ancillary health professionals, such as physical or occupational therapy. Once a diagnosis is reached, it is important to discuss alternatives and options for treatment, allowing the patient and family to make informed decisions regarding their course of treatment. Discussions about the effect of medical conditions on school and other activities of daily life are also an important part of the management of patients with rheumatologic disorders. While many of our conditions are chronic, there are effective treatments available, so patients can live normal active lives.
