UC Davis Medical Center will mark National Nurses Week 2017 with the annual Celebration of Nursing Excellence ceremony, Wednesday, May 10, at 11 a.m. at the Education Building. The celebration is open to all.
The ceremony honors and recognizes all nurses who make a difference to patients, colleagues, the organization and community through their positive, evidence-based practices and outstanding patient care. The event is organized by UC Davis Medical Center and the Nursing Recognition Committee, who include a group of 10 nurse managers and assistant managers who volunteer throughout the year to make National Nurses Week at UC Davis memorable, said Darrell Desmond, one of the nurse organizers this year.
Other events during the week include visits to clinics throughout the week by the UC Davis Medical Center Chaplain and Education Services program for Blessing of the Hands activities. Tuesday, May 9 has been designated as “wear your favorite nurses pin” day, and Thursday, May 11 is “bring in your nursing graduation picture” day. The week concludes with cupcake day on Friday.
National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6 (also known as National Nurses Day) through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The American Nurses Association theme for 2017 is: “Nursing: The balance of mind, body and spirit.”
Toby Marsh, chief nursing and patient care services officer, and Marie Manthey, nurse, author and a founder of the Primary Nursing Care Model, will speak at the event. UC Davis nurses and individuals from non-nursing departments will receive awards for their excellence and commitment to care.
“We use National Nurse’s Week as an opportunity to reflect and celebrate the extraordinary and compassionate care our nurses deliver every day,” Marsh said. “These nominations and awards shine a spotlight on our meaningful work and efforts to define our organizational focus on excellence and advancement of the professional practice of nursing.”
The Celebration of Nursing Excellence ceremony at UC Davis includes the following categories of awards:
- Nursing Care Delivery
- Professional Governance
- Exemplary Professional Practice
- Relationships and Teamwork
- Friends of Nursing (non-nursing departments that support nursing)
Blessing of the Hands
UC Davis Medical Center chaplains will conduct Blessing of the Hands ceremonies in the inpatient nursing units as well as the clinics listed below beginning Monday, May 8. (Download flier here.) Nurses are invited to have their hands blessed with oil as a sign of the care and healing they offer to patients, and in recognition of their vocation as caregivers.
The chaplains also will offer blessings at the May 10 ceremony for UC Davis nurses who work at clinics not directly located on the Sacramento campus or for those unable to obtain a blessing at the designated time in their clinics.
