Mell comes to UC Davis from Stanford University, where he was medical director of the Vascular Clinic and Stanford Healthcare Ambulatory Specialty Care and vice chair of clinical affairs for the surgery department.

Mell is an expert in promoting early recognition of vascular disease to reduce the risks of heart attack, stroke and amputation. He is well known for improving screening, surveillance and treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm, and has been a driving force behind national standards for identifying the condition, optimal monitoring in clinic settings and preventing death following rupture.

At UC Davis, Mell leads a multidisciplinary team of experts who offer advanced diagnostics and both endovascular and surgical interventions for vascular diseases — from venous conditions to peripheral artery disease and critical limb ischemia.

"Dr. Mell is known for setting the highest possible standards for providing the full spectrum of care for vascular conditions,” said Diana Farmer, chair of the UC Davis Department of Surgery. “With his impressive background, we know he will take our vascular center to new levels in outreach, research and treatment for patients with blood vessel disease.”

Mell earned his medical degree from Harvard University and completed his general surgery residency, a transplant fellowship and master’s degree in health services research from Stanford University. He completed a vascular surgery fellowship and advanced training in aortic surgery at the University of Wisconsin.

In his clinic and research, Mell seeks to bring a primary care perspective to the work of vascular specialists, who provide acute and long-term follow-up care for their patients.

"My career is dedicated to delivering high-value and continuous care to patients who are dealing with conditions that can reduce their quality of life and put them at high risk for serious health outcomes,” said Mell. “I look forward to adding my perspective to the incredible team of vascular specialists at UC Davis, and putting our collective expertise to work in broadening access to vascular services in the Central Valley and Northern California.”

The UC Davis Vascular Center links experts in radiology, surgery and internal medicine to provide state-of-the-art care for vascular disease. The team also leads a comprehensive research program that includes several prominent clinical trials for innovative vascular therapies. Visit the vascular center website for more information.
