Eric Kurzrock, chief of pediatric urologic surgery at UC Davis, and his research team received a $785,000 Department of Defense (DOD) Spinal Cord Injury Research Program grant.
Kurzrock developed a new technique to bioengineer and mature blood vessels from stem cells to create bladder grafts and other tissues needed by military patients who were injured during combat.
“We’re honored that the DOD chose our project from such a competitive field,” Kurzrock said. “We’re optimistic that our novel strategy will advance the field of tissue engineering and hopefully the care of patients with spinal cord injuries.”
Additional UC Davis contributors include Stephanie Osborn, Blaine Christiansen, Aijun Wang and Keith Baar.
