Emergency Medicine’s podcast, EM Pulse, received a prestigious platinum eHealthcare Leadership Award in the Best Rich Media category at the annual 22nd Annual Healthcare Internet Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The platinum award is the highest level in the awards ranking and recognizes the work that goes into creating outstanding health websites and digital initiatives.Boldly Learning Sarah Medeiros EM Pulse podcast co-host

Launched in January 2018 and co-hosted by emergency medicine physicians Sarah Medeiros and Julia Magaña, the podcast delves into current topics in emergency medicine through fascinating cases, interviews with authors of groundbreaking research, and discussion with clinical experts in adult and pediatric EM.

The educational episodes help physicians learn together from the amazing people who are changing the landscape of clinical care, but the series attracts a layperson audience as well in all 50 states, two territories and 94 countries.

A recent episode, “Toddlers will sell their souls for stickers,” focused on some of the challenges physicians face when caring for kids in the ED and how they solve them. It included interviews with kids who give their perspectives about what they remember about their trips to the ED along with valuable tips from the experts – UC Davis Children’s Hospital child life specialists, pediatric ED nurses, and pediatric emergency medicine physicians, including Magaña.

Children appreciate distractions when getting procedures done in the emergency department“Kids often can’t, or won’t, tell you what’s wrong or where it hurts,” Medeiros said. “They may have trouble sitting still during an exam or procedure; and their screams put everyone on edge. With this podcast we’re finding out directly from kids what was scary and what helped them feel better.”

Bubble-makers, stickers, electronic games are among the distractions that help pediatric emergency medicine physicians get procedures and examinations done, Magaña said.

The awards program, which drew some 1,000 entries, exclusively recognizes the very best websites and digital communications of health care organizations, online health companies, pharmaceutical/medical equipment firms, agencies/suppliers and business-improvement initiatives.
