Firefighters, burn survivors and Firefighters Burn Institute representatives lifted the spirits of UC Davis Burn Center patients — along with their family members and care teams — by singing carols with Santa Claus and delivering gifts on Christmas morning.
It was the 30th holiday visit to the burn center for Sacramento area firefighters, who this year included Sacramento City Fire Department Captain Mike Feyh and crew members of Truck 6, Truck 2 and Engine 18.
The tradition is especially meaningful for Feyh, because he knows what it is like to be “on the other side of the doors,” as he calls it. He was treated for burn injuries at UC Davis in 2010, and appreciates the opportunity to come back to give back and share some of what he went through with colleagues.
“It’s a profound experience for all of us,” Feyh said. “The ride back to the station is usually fairly quiet as they reflect on how they affected the patients and families, and how grateful they are for what they have and what they do for others.”
A Center of Excellence, the Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center unites the exceptional surgical, critical care and rehabilitation resources of UC Davis to care for the unique needs of adult burn patients. The team also treats pediatric burn patients through a partnership with Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California. In addition to a comprehensive clinical program, the burn center conducts research aimed at improving patient outcomes, leads community outreach to support burn survivors and provides education to reduce burn injuries.
