UC Davis Health has earned “Most Wired” status by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) for the eighth time. The designation includes a performance excellence award and classifies UC Davis Health as a leader in the health care information technology industry.

This year, the UC Davis Health was recognized as a “Level 9 hospital,” the penultimate CHIME classification and defined as an organization that has actively pushed the industry forward. The health system was one of just three hospitals in California to achieve that distinction in 2019.

“We are continuing to evolve as a health care organization, which means making the best of use of modern technology to support what’s most important – high-quality patient care and patient safety,” said David Lubarsky, vice chancellor of human health sciences and CEO of UC Davis Health.  “When used right, technology should make patient care more convenient, at lower costs, and free up our health care team members so they can focus even more on providing a human touch to care delivery.  This honor further solidifies UC Davis as an innovative and forward-thinking health care organization.”

The Most Wired program includes a set of three surveys (domestic, ambulatory and international) created to improve patient safety and outcomes by driving change in the health care IT industry. The program recognizes health care organizations that use innovative and disruptive technologies to advance patient results on a national and global scale.

More than 16,000 organizations participated in the 2019 Most Wired program. Surveys assessed the adoption, integration and impact of technologies in each health care organization at all stages of development. Each organization received a customized report, an overall score and individual scores in eight segments including infrastructure; security; business/disaster recovery; administrative/supply chain; analytics/data management; interoperability/population health; patient engagement; and clinical quality/safety.

“We have made excellence in clinical technologies and infrastructure a top priority because it helps UC Davis clinicians to deliver the best in care to our patients,” said John Cook, interim chief information officer for the health system. “We focus on technologies and practices that support our care teams in their dedication to quality.”

Maintaining and elevating standards of care is the foundation of the annual recognitions.

“Health care organizations across the globe are continually striving to raise the standard of care, pushing themselves and their peers to do better,” said CHIME president and CEO Russ Branzell. “We designed Most Wired to identify and share those leading practices so everyone can benefit. It is an honor to be among those that perform at the highest levels, knowing that the excellence they achieve will impact patients for years to come.”

This year, CHIME added an "ambulatory" recognition for outpatient clinics, in which UC Davis Health also earned Level 9 recognition. In addition, the organization has expanded international outreach and added a system that allows the participating health systems like UC Davis Health to better benchmark its achievements and measure levels of adoption.
