School of Nursing commencement this Thursday

(SACRAMENTO)

The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis hosts its 2022 Commencement Thursday. It’s the first in-person graduation celebration for the school since 2019.

The event at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts on the UC Davis campus is by invitation only (students were allotted a limited number of tickets). Graduates are from the Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Health Services — Physician Assistant Studies, Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Science — Family Nurse Practitioner degree programs.

livestream is available beginning at 10 a.m. Commencement will also be broadcast live on the School of Nursing Facebook page.

A total of 135 students will receive their diplomas and hoods. UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May will confer degrees as students walk across the stage.

“I’m thrilled we can join together to celebrate the dedication, intellectual effort, and the resilience of our Classes of 2021 and 2022,” said School of Nursing Dean Stephen Cavanagh. “It is also my first in-person commencement since joining the school in 2019, which makes it particularly special for me.”

The commencement speaker is Aron King a graduate of the school’s Master of Science — Leadership Degree Program and assistant nurse manager at UC Davis Health. He is co-author of the 2021 book The Diaries of a Resilient Black Nurse: An Anthology of Struggles and Achievements of Black Nurses in America. King serves on the executive board for the Capitol City Black Nurses Association, a local chapter of the National Black Nurses Association, and is a co-chair for the health committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Sacramento. He enters the school’s Doctor of Philosophy Degree Program this fall.

Commencement the past two years was a virtual event, with students participating on Zoom from their homes where they celebrated with their parents and partners.
