Over the past 20 years, he has conducted more than 700 psychological and forensic evaluations (e.g., parent-child relationship assessments, differential diagnosis, treatment/reunification planning, juvenile competency, juvenile transfer, and juvenile/adult sex offense recidivism risk). He also provides expert witness testimony and consultation regarding child sexual abuse, the effects of trauma on children, and related topics (e.g., suggestibility and memory).

Dr. Carmichael is recognized as an expert in the field of child trauma/maltreatment, and he enjoys educating people about evidenced based treatment and assessment. He provides training, consultation, and supervision to various legal, mental health, and social service professionals.
