Philosophy of Care

My approach to excellent patient is care simple.  I listen first and then ask questions.  I make sure that all patient concerns have been acknowledged and have a working plan by the end of the visit.  The patient is the focus and not the computer screen.  

I also believe in direct communication between the patient and the doctor.  For this reason, I rely heavily on My Chart which allows patients to email me directly.  This allows for ongoing support to the patient.  I also believe in staying current with evidenced-based patient care.  

My participation in the residency program as one of the primary teachers in both clinic and hospital settings forces me to stay updated on medical research that directly affects patient care.  

Clinical Interests

Dr. Katie Newell has been practicing Primary Care Internal Medicine at UC Davis since 2001.  As a member of the Internal Medicine Faculty Practice, she provides direct primary care care to a large, diverse group of patients.  

She also participates in the UC Davis Internal Medicine residency program in many capacities including outpatient teaching, inpatient teaching, and by participating in the Residency Selection Committee.  

She also works directly with UC Davis medical students through clinic supervision, rounding on the wards and by participating in the Endocrinology Case series.  This year she will be co-staffing the Musculoskeletal Specialty clinic at the Sacramento County Clinic.  

Research/Academic Interests

Teaching in the residency program and medical school at UC Davis.  Direct patient care through the Internal Medicine Faculty Practice and the Musculoskeletal clinic at Sacramento County Health Clinic.
