Mental health and the workplace

From the idiom-generating postal service shootings of the 1980s and 90s to the crash of Germanwings Flight 9525, workplace killings generate significant media attention, public concern – and stigma.
Should they? Some facts and trends:

Infographic: Workplace violence: 2 million - Annual number of U.S. workers who experience workplace violence – mostly lesser assaults, domestic violence, stalking, threats, harassment, sexual harassment and physical/emotional abuse. 12 - Percentage of incidents in which a co-worker or former employee is the perpetrator. Four - Rank of homicide as a cause of fatal occupational injury in the U.S. Extreme incidents such as mass shootings are very rare. Daily suffering among us: 1 in 5 - Number of working Americans surveyed who reported experiencing the symptoms of a mental-health disorder in previous month. Psychiatric disorders are a leading cause of U.S. disability. 2 - Rank of depression as a cause of disability worldwide by 2020, according to the World Health Organization. Mental-health conditions account for more than half as many disability days compared to all physical conditions combined.
