Meet M.L. Farrell New director of alumni engagement

New support for your alumni network Meet M.L. Farrell New director of alumni engagement

The UC Davis School of Medicine and UC Davis School of Medicine Alumni Association recently welcomed M.L. Farrell as director of alumni engagement. M.L., whose initials stand for Mary Lee, brings more than 30 years of executive experience in higher education, alumni relations and development to the position.

“We’re thrilled to have M.L. join us,” said association President Topher Stephenson, “She brings much energy to our board, and is orchestrating multiple new events that will reconnect our alumni back to the school.

“M.L.’s appointment reaffirms our commitment to actively bring together our diverse alumni that call UC Davis School of Medicine home, and is a testament to the vision of our dean, Julie Freischlag.”

M.L. arrived in December from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, where she served as director of alumni relations. Previously she spent more than 18 years at Brown University, first as director of university events and then director of the medical school’s alumni and parent programs.

Between her time at Brown and Northwestern, M.L. also held a unique role with the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, where she served as director for patient engagement and special services for Johns Hopkins USA in Florida. She has served on boards of directors for multiple nonprofit organizations and also enjoys food, wine and film in her free time.

At UC Davis, M.L. serves medical school alumni as well as residents and fellows who trained here. She is the main point of contact for all things related to engaging alumni in the life of their medical alma mater, and works to foster participation in alumni activities on campus, regionally and around the country.

“I believe my role here, first and foremost, is to build an exceptionally strong – interested, involved and inclusive – alumni community,” she said. “I want to work with alumni and students to help build a network that they can consider their network.

“My goal is to provide as many opportunities as possible for alumni to connect with each other and with students and to easily stay involved.”

M.L. said she aims to encourage and facilitate sharing news about alumni and their accomplishments while offering opportunities for volunteer activities such as mentoring, class reunions, and fundraising efforts. Two immediate priorities include a major renovation of the association’s web site, and planning for – and encouraging all alumni to attend – Alumni Weekend 2016 on May 13-14..

“I’m looking forward to meeting and interacting regularly with all interested alumni to hear ideas and feedback,” she said.

“By keeping them informed and offering fun ways to stay connected, it’s my hope they’ll have reason to come back and give back to the place that helped shape them into the physicians they are today.”
