Passport to Ireland Nov. 4 charity gala has Celtic emphasis

A chance to make new friends, raise money for cancer research and have a great time, this year's Passport to Ireland event will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Hilton Hotel, 2200 Harvard Street in Sacramento.

The second annual fund- raiser for the UC Davis Cancer Center features performances by Irish soprano Patricia Cahill, known as "the Irish nightingale" to aficionados of authentic Gaelic music, and Irish harpist Annie Roos.

Cahill has performed in music halls, theaters, cabarets and on television throughout Ireland, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and the United States. She has recorded 10 albums on the Decca and Deram labels and last year released two recordings on her own label, ALTA Records.

Retired news anchorman Stan Atkinson will emcee the event with assistance from special guest Sandy Smoley, former secretary of the California Health and Welfare Agency.
