Philosophy of Care

Thorough communication is critical to determine optimal, individualized management strategies for each patient. I work to ensure that every patient fully understands his or her medical condition before embarking on various treatments.

In addition, treatment decisions must be taken in the context of each patient's medical, social, and family environment. As such, I balance each patient's condition within their respective situation.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Canvasser is a fellowship-trained endourologist and minimally invasive surgeon offering care for adults with kidney stone disease, kidney obstruction, kidney cancer, and enlarged prostates/difficulty urinating. He also cares for kids with kidney stone disease. He has a special interest in the medical management and prevention of patients with recurrent kidney stones.

His surgical expertise includes complex surgical management for kidney stones, holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HOLEP) for difficulty urinating, and complex minimially-invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgeries for non-functioning kidneys, kidney obstruction, and kidney cancer.

Along with Dr. Jonathan Moore, the kidney stone and HOLEP program is one of the busiest in Northern California.

Surgeries performed:

  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
  • Ureteroscopy
  • Shockwave lithotripsy (SWL)
  • Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HOLEP)
  • Laparoscopic nephrectomy
  • Robotic partial nephrectomy
  • Robotic pyeloplasty
  • Single-incision robotic pyeloplasty
  • Robotic ureter reimplant
  • Single-incision robotic ureter reimplant
  • Other complex robotic ureter reconstruction

Research/Academic Interests

Dr. Canvasser's research focuses on the prevention and management of patients with complex kidney stone disease, as well as improving minimally-invasive surgical management of kidney obstruction, kidney cancer, and enlarged prostates.
