(SACRAMENTO)

Angel N. Desai, assistant clinical professor of infectious diseases at UC Davis Health, has been named a member of the 2024 New Voices cohort at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

New Voices is a prominent leadership program for early- and-career professionals that aims to expand the diversity of expertise engaged in the work of the National Academies. It also seeks to develop a network of leaders to address national and global challenges.

During her two-year term of service, Desai will engage in the advisory and convening work of the National Academies, develop interdisciplinary projects and collaborate with a robust network of emerging STEM leaders across the country and around the world.

Desai is one of 26 outstanding scientists, engineers and medical professionals to join the 2024 cohort.

“From the announcement of the very first New Voices cohort, I have been thrilled with the caliber, diversity, and dedicated work ethic of these emerging leaders,” said National Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt. “They represent proudly the best and brightest of young American researchers.”

The new cohort is connected to an advisory committee made up of senior experts; elected members of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Academy of Medicine; and program alumni who are dedicated to the New Voices mission.

The New Voices network has 60 members across three cohorts. Members of previous cohorts have served on over 21 National Academies committees and represented United States early-career STEM voices at more than 27 major international and domestic events.

“It is an honor and privilege to be representing UC Davis Health and joining a program committed to upholding the standards for quality of science,” Desai said. “I am excited to engage with my fellow New Voices peers in the coming two years.”
