Breaking down barriers for Spanish-speaking children with type 1 diabetes

In a study published in JMIR Diabetes, researchers at UC Davis Health found children with type 1 diabetes from predominantly Spanish-speaking households are less likely than other children to use insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, and are more likely to experience barriers to using these technologies. As a result of these findings, our experts are working toward improving Spanish language educational processes and teaching materials, as well as increasing contact with peer groups using diabetes technology.

Strategies to improve telehealth operations

Researchers interviewed endocrinologists across four University of California academic medical centers to assess telehealth best practices and examine challenges that prevent a successful telehealth visit. Published in the Journal of Clinical Diabetes, the study found three strategies to improve telehealth operations including, having dedicated support staff obtain data from patients’ devices (like remote glucose monitors) ahead of telehealth visits; creating efficient workflows around scheduling follow-ups to ensure patients don’t experience lapses in care; and finding ways to facilitate team-based diabetes care.
