The Oak Park Farmers Market (OPFM) has had an outstanding 2024 season, marked by growth, community engagement, and expanded access to healthy food. Hosted by the Food Literacy Center, OPFM continues to be a vital gathering place for local farmers, small businesses, and families in Sacramento.
A key achievement this year has been the significant increase in EBT sales, with over $11,000 generated so far, which is nearly double last season’s total. This milestone underscores the market’s ongoing commitment to making fresh, local produce accessible to low-income families. In addition, more than 10 tons of produce have been sold, further demonstrating the market’s impact in supporting local farmers and providing fresh food to the community.
OPFM also remains a family-friendly space, offering more than just fresh produce. Children visiting the market received food and nutrition education empowering them to make healthier food choices. Over $2,200 in Carrot Cash was distributed, enabling children to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables directly from farmers. This initiative not only promotes healthy eating but also fosters a connection between young shoppers and local food producers.
Small businesses have flourished at the market as well, with vendors generating over $120,000 in sales this year. Many vendors express gratitude for the supportive customers who return each week, emphasizing the loyalty and dedication of the Oak Park community to supporting local businesses.
The market’s reputation for accessibility has also attracted new farmers. Many cite OPFM as a welcoming environment where they can build confidence in their business, connect with the community, and gain valuable experience selling their products.
Food Literacy Center is proud to run this program in Oak Park, where many of our elementary students and their families live. It's great to see them visiting the market to continue building the healthy habit of eating their veggies!—Amber Stott the CEO & Chief Food Genius
